Information regarding wildflower improvement works

Wildflower improvement works will soon begin in a small area of Inglestone Common north of Chase Lane at the entrance to the common.

This work is part of the Higher Tier Countryside Stewardship agreement which has been planned in partnership with Natural England. The area covers 1.12 hectares. Local contractors will be doing this work. Thistle and some encroaching scrub will be cut and collected, and some bare ground created which is an important step in ensuring that wildflower seed will germinate.

Seeds will then be lightly rolled to ensure good contact with the soil. This summer, seeds were collected from Yarley Meadows, adjacent to the common, and yellow rattle 'the meadow maker' seed has been added to this mix to increase wildflower success rates. The exact areas have been carefully selected avoiding the areas of highest diversity, leaving a mosaic of vegetation and making the maximum improvement to diversity and abundance in the area. This is the only area of wildflower enhancement on the common as part of this 10-year Countryside Stewardship scheme.

Areas previously sown with wildflower seed are now showing an increase in diversity and abundance of wildflowers, some 4 or 5 years since the wildflower seed works were done. It is a long process and does initially look drastic, but it is worth the patient waiting to do what we can to improve the habitats on the common. Neutral grasslands with these species have declined catastrophically, by over 97% since the inter-war period.
