Should we have a Christmas Tree on Hawkesbury Plain in 2022?

Should we have a Christmas Tree on Hawkesbury Plain in 2022?

While most of us would like to ignore the distant loom of Christmas and hang on to summer- the Parish Council needs to consider the dates for the Christmas lights switch on.

However, it has been raised as to whether we continue the tradition of having a real Norway Spruce cut down.

There are factors leading to this-

  • Climate Emergency being the primary one, understanding the implications of perhaps unnecessarily cutting down a tree, especially as we urging people in the village not to cut down trees and to plant as many new ones as we can, encouraging hedgerow planting etc, for both wildlife and climate emergency benefits.
  • We no longer have access to a donated tree from the Badminton estate, so will need to source one commercially which the Parish Council will need to use village funds for. (Along with the mulled wine.) An approximate cost of a 20-22ft tree without delivery is £460. A 14-16ft tree is approx £170.

Several options have been suggested- we would like to hear people's views on this and other ideas!

  • Buy a living tree and plant it at the same location, a 5ft tree potted tree approx £75. It would be an investment for the future years…
  • Decorate the trees that are currently growing on The Plain.
  • Use the parish funds to buy a 20ft cut tree.
  • Does anyone know where there might be a tree we could have for the village Christmas tree light-up?
  • Create our tree- from glass bottles or maybe plastic bottles- see photo idea. A community-involved event to build our village Christmas tree!

Please, please, let the P.C. know your views- it's a lovely Christmas focal point for the village.
